In a ceremony Monday afternoon, Hardin Memorial Hospital welcomed two physicians to its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which is set to open in early September.
Neonatologists Dr. Bridget Hempel and Dr. Chukwuma Nnorom will practice under the leadership of Dr. Dan Stewart, the head of University of Louisville Physicians Neonatology Group.
The physicians will provide around-the-clock coverage for the hospital.
During the ceremony, a $20,000 donation from the Hardin Memorial Health Foundation and a group of area pediatricians was presented to help purchase equipment required for the six-bed NICU.
With the addition of the equipment and neonatologists, the unit will be the only fully functioning Level II NICU in Central Kentucky, according to a hospital news release.
Renovations for the new unit are underway in the hospital’s BirthPlace.
