Hardin Memorial Health’s safety grade has gone up.
The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit that evaluates and reports safety and quality performance of more than 2,600 hospitals nationwide, released its biannual hospital safety grades this week. Hardin Memorial Health received an A rating, up from a B this past spring and a C last fall.
Of 50 hospitals rated in Kentucky, only 13 received an A rating.
Leapfrog looks at publicly available safety measures from different organizations, such as the American Hospital Association and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and puts the information into one report, HMH chief nursing officer Sharon Wright said.
Wright said the group looks at 27 different quality measures, including inpatient injuries, infections and medical and medication errors.
Wright said the HMH team is proud of its positive progression.
“We are very pleased to have received an A rating. What that means to us is that we are making improvements,” she said.
Some of those improvements, Wright said, include using ultra violet light cleaning equipment; stronger, longer-lasting antibacterial cleansers; personal protection equipment for isolation patients; protocols that limit catheter use; and mandating stringent hand washing.
“It may sound basic but washing hands before and after any patient interaction is as critical as anything we do when it comes to infection control,” said Wright in a news release.
Wright said patients, their families and all visitors at the hospital also play a role in successful infection control. She said not only do they ask patients and their visitors to practice proper hand hygiene, but also they need them to speak up if anyone providing care forgets to sanitize their hands when they come and go from patient rooms.
Wright said Leapfrog is one of several organizations that release rankings throughout the year and HMH uses each survey to highlight possible improvements.
Wright said providing the very best and safest patient care is a constant priority at HMH.
“We take quality and safety very seriously. At Hardin Memorial you are getting the highest quality and safest care for every patient, every time. Our goal is always A rate,” Wright said.
