COMPLEX CARE CLINIC. Hardin Memorial Hospital has a long history of meeting the region’s needs. The latest is the Complex Care Clinic to bring more awareness and treatment to hepatitis C – the most common form of viral hepatitis in the United States.
Laura Buchanan, HMH gastroenterologist and clinic provider, called hepatitis C, a contagious liver disease, “an epidemic’’ in Kentucky.
Hepatitis C claimed 19,000 lives as recent as 2013, according to a Centers for Disease Control Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly report.
The clinic provides an opportunity to be treated locally instead of the inconvenience of driving to cities such as Louisville or Lexington.
Hepatitis C usually is spread when blood from a person infected with the virus enters the body of someone who is not infected.
To combat the potentially fatal disease, the region now has a care provider to battle the disease head-on.
